PlayPosit Webinar Q&A
Q: Speaker mentioned that this is a trial? Is College of the Canyons part of the trial? If not, who should be contacted?
A: PlayPosit is currently in a pilot with 12 California Community Colleges, with onboarding for additional colleges anticipated in 2020. Please have your Canvas admin contact support@ccctechconnect.org to join our list of interested colleges. College of the Canyons is not on our list as of yet.
Q: Are the videos/bulbs accessible?
A: Yes, for details on PlayPosit's adherence to accessibility, please refer to PlayPosit Accessibility article: https://knowledge.playposit.com/article/82-accessibility
Q: Will Playposit work with ConferZoom videos as well as 3C Media?
A: You can upload your ConferZoom videos to our 3C Media hosting site, and then create your bulb. PlayPosit currently is not set up to directly link to the ConferZoom recordings.
Q: Are the captions he’s referring to created by 3C Media automatically or do we submit them to 3C Media before creating a bulb?
A: You would still need to request captioning from 3C Media so a vtt file could be created. Captioning takes typically 3-5 business days. When closed captioning is complete, you would then link your video to your PlayPosit bulb and 3C Media's vtt file would be loaded automatically.
Q: Did Phillip say that grades are automatically put into the Gradebook?
A: Bulbs containing only Multiple Choice, Check all and Fill-in-the-Blank question types are automatically graded and synced in Gradebook. If your bulb contains any other question type, the student response will require you to manually grade and sync to Gradebook from the PlayPosit Monitor.
Q: Can it import captions from YouTube?
A: Captions that are sourced directly from video integrations are now always loaded automatically, with the exception of YouTube videos. If YouTube has been used as a video source, 'Fetch YouTube Captions' can be selected to fetch auto generated captions from YouTube.
Q: When will a 508 VPAT be available? The versions I was provided only include WCAG information.
A: This documentation will be available end of January 2020.
Q: Can we upload questions from a testbank type file?
A: Unfortunately not.
Q: Can we use regular expressions for fill in the blank and are answers case-sensitive, punctuation-sensitive?
A: When creating a fill-in-the-blank interaction, the instructor has access to a rich text editor, however when the student is completing the bulb, they do not have access to this. Their answers must be typed in using the keyboard only. Also, answers are spelling/punctuation-sensitive but not caps-sensitive.
Q: One of the biggest problems I have with external tools in Canvas is that they often don’t trigger a “to be graded” notification (to-do list on home page). When students complete their work, but there is more to be graded (short answers, etc.), does this show up in the “to-do” list?
A: No, PlayPosit does not show up in the "to-do" list at this time.
Q: Does this work on a mobile phone or table display?
A: PlayPosit is accessible through the Canvas mobile app for learners to view and complete PlayPosit assignments.
Q: Does Playposit work well with the Canvas mobile app?
A: PlayPosit is optimized for viewing content on any mobile device. Learners are able to access PlayPosit assignments through Canvas.
Q: Accessibility supported? *From the WCAG VPAT, I have not been able to distinguish between the accessibility of the product for faculty members and staff creating content, and for student users.
A: We primarily design for the platform accessibility by students with limited focus on the instructor experience. The WCAG VPAT reflects this focus.
Q: What is the intended time-frame for full implementation across the CCC system?
A: We are looking at 2021 for ultimate adoption.
Q: Is there a math text input tool?
A: The PlayPosit rich text editor uses LaTex, which allows instructors and students to write out whole chemical and mathematical equations.
Q: And is it keyboard accessible? *Do the keyboard shortcuts work with assistive technology? For example, to use the keyboard shortcuts that Canvas provides, assistive technology like JAWS has to be turned off.
A: For information about PlayPosit specific keyboard accessibility, go to https://knowledge.playposit.com/article/82-accessibility
Q: Can it be used outside of Canvas (I mean standalone)?
A: Faculty and students should not access PlayPosit outside of canvas. To take advantage of the PlayPosit integration with Canvas, PlayPosit should only be accessed from your college's single sign-on portal.
Q: This question is more about capacity. If I want to make a quick video in response to student questions in a particular week, does 3C Media have the capacity to turn around the captioning so I can upload it to Playposit and post it quickly?
A: Unfortunately, it would be the same turnaround time whether you are using PlayPosit or not. You would still need to go through the process of uploading the video to 3C Media, filling out the caption request form on 3C Media, and captioning would then typically take 3-5 business days. When closed captioning is complete, you would then link your video to your PlayPosit bulb and 3C Media's vtt file would be loaded automatically. NOTE: All videos reside at your video host provider whether its 3C Media, YouTube, Vimeo or other provider.
Q: The fill in the blank is it numeric or text?
A: When creating a fill-in-the-blank interaction, the instructor has access to a rich text editor that includes LaTex capability (chemical and mathematical equations), however when the student is completing the fill in the blank interaction, they do not have access to this. Their answers must be typed in using the keyboard only (alpha-numeric). Also, answers are spelling/punctuation-sensitive but not caps-sensitive.
Q: I just saw that the App was available in my college’s Canvas Apps, and I just “installed” it; So, does this mean I can jump in now and use its full features?
A: I am not showing College of the Desert or Crafton Hills on the list of colleges that we have onboarded. It's possible that your college has their own separate PlayPosit account. You would need to contact your college Canvas administrator for that information. If your college doesn't have their own account, you're welcome to forward our email address to the Canvas administrator, support@ccctechconnect.org, in order to join our list of interested colleges.
Q: To clarify, after the institution request PlayPosit, will training be provided at the institution or various training at different locations?
A: PlayPosit training for onboarded colleges will be facilitated online using Zoom.
Q: Will there be a cost to the colleges for this after the pilot?
A: No, we are not looking to transfer costs to the community colleges after the pilot. However, there are some PlayPosit features we did not contract for in this Pilot, and may not in the future. Your college would need to contract separately with PlayPosit for those features.
Q: Is there a limit to the number of colleges that can participate in the pilot? Is this a pilot with an end date? If so, what is that date?
A: Only California Community Colleges may participate. We anticipate to end the pilot phase in FY20/21
Q: How does PlayPosit compare to Canvas Studio?
A: Some of the largest differences are the number of interactions available - PlayPosit offers many more types of interactions along with multiple choice and check all that Studio includes. We also have a media library, the option for learner made bulbs, broadcast, jumps, and more.
Q: I teach American Sign Language. Would students be able to respond in video responses?
A: The video recording/upload feature is not part of this pilot. You can encourage your students to use Zoom online meetings to record video. Zoom offers free limited accounts to all students.
Q: Good afternoon. Similar to some other questions I am seeing: what is the timeline for this pilot through 3C and/or outlook for ultimate adoption?
A: We are looking at 2021 for ultimate adoption; onboarding additional community colleges begins January 2020.
Q: Is it possible to see a live demo - perhaps sharing your desktop?
A: This isn't a demo, but still might be helpful to watch: https://cccconfer.zoom.us/recording/share/lUtO7BCRVOykosAoJCFJ6xAGfH6BYe95x9ZZ6704dymwIumekTziMw?startTime=1575317142000
Q: So if we participate in the pilot is this something that we can use in the Spring 2020 as we create these bulbs? This will be for San Diego State University and maybe San Diego Miramar college.
A: This is only available to the California Community Colleges. Please ask your college's Canvas admin send an email to support@ccctechconnect.org and we will get Miramar College onto the list for the next available group for onboarding.
Q: Is College of the Desert or San Bernardino Community Colleges (Valley or Crafton Hills) in the Pilot?
A: I'm not seeing College of the Desert or San Bernardino Community Colleges (Valley or Crafton Hills) in the pilot or on the interest list. Please have your Canvas admin contact us (support@ccctechconnect.org).
Q: We’re currently piloting Canvas Studio (another video annotation platform) at my college (Chabot). Is there a way to transfer the videos from that platform to PlayPosit?
A: We encourage you to use 3C Media Solutions to host your videos. We can look further into whether the interaction content can be transfer or not.
Q: Can they retake the video quiz as many times as they wish?
A: Instructors can allow for retakes of bulbs as well as allow students multiple attempts at answering questions in the bulb itself. This would be done in bulb settings.
Q: Is this only for instruction or can it be also used for professional development, required training, etc.? Time on task is a requirement for some trainings.
A: Because this is integrated in Canvas, an employee at a community college would need a Canvas account in order to access PlayPosit. For this reason, our target audience is instructors and students.
Q: Do the bulbs roll over with a course when imported to a new Canvas shell?
A: PlayPosit supports Canvas's course copy feature. This means: 1) All PlayPosit links and Bulbs will transfer to the new course. 2) If any students are retaking the course, previous scores will be reset automatically.
Q: Regarding Studio, it would be great if we could use a Studio URL for use in PlayPosit since it's an overlay.
A: Generally speaking, the only thing that PlayPosit will integrate with is an external video host or a learning management system as opposed to other video overlay or annotation platforms. To support such things would require a large amount of custom development.
Q: Have you made a video that shows how to create these bulbs by any chance?
Yes, please click on this link: https://cccconfer.zoom.us/recording/share/lUtO7BCRVOykosAoJCFJ6xAGfH6BYe95x9ZZ6704dymwIumekTziMw?startTime=1575317142000
Q: You mentioned that colleges that have the 3C Media Solutions LTI installed can have the PlayPosit installed. Is that correct? But we can use PlayPosit with videos hosted on YouTube or Vimeo… is that correct?
A: At this point, any California Community College can contact us to be added to the interest list. As far as video sources to create bulbs, you would be able to link from not only 3C Media, but YouTube and Vimeo as well.
Q: What is the deadline to apply?
A: There is no deadline to apply at this point, however there is a rapidly growing interest list, so having your Canvas administrator contact us sooner than later would be ideal (support@ccctechconnect.org).
Q: How about Chabot College? Are they in the pilot?
A: Chabot College is on our interest list.
